Electronic cigarette safety for newbies to vaping

Electronic cigarette safety is another thing you will want to keep in mind when you fist start vaping.  Especially if you have small children in your house.  The e-liquid, or smoke juice, may have nicotine in it, if you are like most of us that are moving from cigs to e-cigs.  After a while, you may start phasing out the nicotine by getting lower and lower amounts in your favorite e liquids.  However, something to remember, is that even a small amount ingested by a small child can be very harmful, and even fatal.

If a toddler eats one cigarette, it can seriously harm them.  A bottle of e-liquid contains a carton or more worth of nicotine in that small amount of liquid. Keep this in mind, and have a good safe place to keep your electronic cigarette supplies out of the reach of small children for their own safety. Little kids are curious, and will climb up things to get to something colorful that they see up high, so it is a good idea to keep them in some kind of storage box, so they are more out of sight.

Also, if you have a spill, and it gets on your skin, it can soak in and make you feel very ill.  You need to wash any skin with soap and water to keep it from soaking in too much, as soon as a spill happens.   Do not just wipe it off with a towel, or paper towel, because that will just make it spread over a larger area of your skin, and allow more to be absorbed before you get it washed off.  Keep this in mind for personal safety, as well as the safety of others, including your children and even pets.

When I am filling up my e cig with smoke juice, I normally keep everything over a small cookie sheet I bought just for this.  It keeps any spilled fluids contained, and I can easily wash it off when I am done if I happen to make a bit of a mess.   You should always have a couple of paper towels on hand as well, just to keep your e-cig cleaned off when your done, and many people use them when they are opening the parts that hold the liquids, so they do not get it on their fingers.

If you get it in your eyes…  It will freakin burn like fire!  Get to the kitchen sink and run cool water in your eye(s) for at least 5 minutes.  Longer if needed for sure.  I have never had it happen to me, but have read about it happening to someone else, and he was in pain for quite a while.  I would even suggest getting medical help after rinsing your eyes, just to be on the safe side.  But that may depend if the burning stopped or kept going too.   I can’t really say for sure, but if it hurts and it is in your eyes, it would be the smart thing to do.

I am sure there are some flavors out there, that contain real berry flavor extracts, and such, that may easily stain your cloths too, if you spill it on them, so use care, and you should be fine.  I know I have spilled a couple of drops here and there on my shirt, or pants, and have not noticed a stain, but every flavor can be different.  Again, just use your head, and you shouldn’t have any issues to worry about.

Okay, that was the bad stuff.  Now the good side of things.  If you are going from regular tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes, you will no longer have to worry about your paint in your house becoming yellowed over time from the nicotine in the smoke.  There is no smoke, just water vapors that dissipate pretty fast.   You will notice that your house will start smelling cleaner, and your cloths will not smell like what your smoking.  You can walk up to non smokers right after taking a few hits off your e cig, and they will not smell it all over you.   The safety part of it, is that the vapor you breath out has almost nothing left in it for others to breath in.  Some will have a lingering smell, depending on the flavor, but many have no smell left at all in the vapor that you blow out.  Second had vaping does not look like an issue with the research that I have read, that was done by notable research facilities.

I hope you find this information helpful about electronic cigarette safety.

Ego batteries for electronic cigarettes

You may know about Ego batteries already, but for those that do not, please keep reading.  I just want to give my experience with battery types for beginners, and want to explain the reason they may want to look into ego, or ego type batteries to maximize their vaping start up.  It is not always easy to find info on what and why, when you are new to something, so I hope to shed some light on Ego batteries for anyone looking for this information.

I started off like a lot of people, buying what ever the gas station had for, maybe $5 to $10.  I can’t remember the prices because it has been quite a while back now.  But we decided to give them a try, and found they were not too bad.  It really helped us to not smoke regular cigarettes, but the batteries only lasted for a couple of hours, so we had to buy more kits to get more batteries to keep some charging all the time. That worked out find around the house, but when you leave home, your pretty much out of luck, unless you have a box of them to take with you.  This is a pretty poor option in my eyes.

One day, we went to a flea market, and found a electronic cigarette shop in it.  This was pretty cool, because we gave up on those gas station ones.  They had some with larger batteries called Ego.  We tested out their kits, and picked up a kit for me and one for my wife, and a bunch of other stuff that day.  The Ego batteries were 900mh and 1100 mah so they would last all day between the two batteries.  That was pretty cool.  They are bigger than a cigarette, about the size of a cigar, and that took a few days to get used to, but we did.  The going all day on one or two batteries was a lot better than having to grab a fresh one every couple of hours.

Our next batteries were ego C twist.  They were 1100 mah also, so they last most of the day too, but they have an end cap that twists so you can go from 3.2 up to 4.8 volts.  This makes a big difference on some of the flavors we use.  Also, if your using a low resistance atomizer, you need to keep it at 4 volts or below, or you will scorch your e juice, and burn out your atomizer much faster.   Since getting my vivi nova tank, I can use 2.4 and 2.8 coils with it.  I used to have some 3.0, but I can’t seem to buy them anymore.  But you can run up to the 4.8 volts with the higher resistance coils.  Just find your sweet spot for the flavor you have.  You can get more vapor this way, but you need to make sure you do not over heat the coil and burn it out, or burn the flavor.

These ego twist batteries are great to use due to their size.  They are not as big as other mods, and there are several types of lanyards you can use for when your out and about, and don’t want to have it fall.  I use my ego still, when I go out on my boat, because when I am fishing, I do not have a lanyard that fits my bigger mod, and I don’t want to drop anything off into the lake…

So if your just starting out and trying to find what will work for you.  I highly suggest getting an Ego kit, with at least an 1100 mah battery.  The higher that number, the longer it will last.   You will be much more satisfied with it once you get used to it being bigger than a cigarette.  Although, some of you will still want to use the smaller ones that are more the size of a real cigarette.  It is personal preference but I just thought I would let you know why I enjoy my ego batteries.  The kits come with clearomizers or tanks and a charger, with usually 2 batteries and a carry case, but they are different from place to place.

Good luck, and happy vaping!

Vivi-nova tank review

If you are like most people, when you first started vaping, you would start off with maybe some of those cheap gas station e-cigs, then later moved to something that has a bigger battery so you could vape longer without having to recharge it.   Once you move to a ego type or some other battery mod, you will probably find yourself wanting more eliquid in your electronic cigarette, so you do not have to top it off every few hours, or so.

That is when you may want to start looking at the larger tank systems.  Now is the time you should check out the vivi-nova tank.  If you do not like how large it is, there is also a vivi-nova mini.  However, you will love the vivi nova if you give it a chance.  I did, and love it.  It holds about a days worth of smoke juice, and you can vape all day and not need to refill it.  That is great.

The vivi-nova is also very easy to fill compared to a lot of the other tanks out there.  It hardly ever leaks, and when it does, it is likely because the atomizer untwisted a bit when you took the lid off to fill it.  Simply open it back up, tighten the atomizer and your set.  I have only had that happen once or twice in the last 6 months. So it does not happen often.  And this is about the only tank that I have ever used that does not flood and gurgle.

The do have a plastic tube for the main tank body, so using pure VG e-liquids, or spicy things like cinnamon are not recommended, because they will fog the tank and melt it over time.    You don’t want that…  but a 50/50 blend or even a 40 pg/60 vg, should be okay to use.

You can get them with just the clear plastic tube, or you can get a metal cover that goes over it, in many different colors.  I have blue, and purple, but found that I prefer using it without it so I can see my juice level.  Go figure…  I spent an extra buck or two for that cover and they just sit on my desk.  Your mileage may very with that though.  I do see a lot of other people that do use the colored covers.  If they had the gold in stock, I would have likely got that.  There are a lot of colors to choose from.

As for the atomizer, it is super easy to change out.  You get the 2.4 ohm one installed when you open the box, and have a 2.8 and a 1.8 ohm to use also.  When it begins to clog, if you use darker liquids, or if it begins to have some leakage, it is likely time to change the atomizer out.  I get a week or two out of mine easily.  Many times I get 3 or 4 weeks.   It really depends on how hot you vape (voltage) and if you use a thicker dark juice.  The darker ones seem to leave a residue that builds up on the coil, and eventually blocks the air flow, and does not vape as well.

To change the coil, you just vape all the e liquid out, or suck it out with a syringe, then unscrew the the tank body, then unscrew the top of the atomizer from the post in the middle.  Put a new one on, and tighten it good, then put your body back on, then fill with your favorite smoke juice, and put the top back on, and your back to vaping in just minutes.   I usually buy 3 to 6 coils at a time.  Some places give discounts for orders of 10 or more, but I have not done that yet – just saying, there are deals out there that help with costs, if you look for them.

A definite must have for your arsenal though.  You will be glad you invested the $13 to 15 bucks. It is well worth it.  It is a lot more economical than spending 3 bucks or so per clearomizer when they only last a few days to a week at most.  The replacement coils for the vivi nova tank is less than $2 each.

Almost all vaping stores carry them so they are pretty easy to find too.

Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy your vaping!

Tidewater Tobacco by Flavor West – DIY Review

Comments Off

I mixed up a batch of the tidewater tobacco by Flavor West, on 5-5-2013.   Today I am sampling it.  The flavor mix is at 2%, as everything stronger would gag almost anyone, on the other tobacco flavors I have tested out.

Right off the bat, first few hits are showing promising signs of a decent tobacco flavor, or possibly one…  with one major exception.  The throat hit is amazingly strong, harsh, or what ever you would call it.  Almost like a dry hit kind of strong.   I am going to take a few minutes, get a drink and come back to it.  I know the wick is completely soaked, so it is not a dry hit, but it seems a lot like it.

Ok, I am back now.   It is real strong.  A slight grassy taste to it, but absolutely none of the perfume crap that I have been tasting in their other tobacco flavors.  It is much better in that respect.  Well, only a very slight hint of that talc powdery feel to it on my inner mouth, and a super slight hint of that perfume to it, but so slight, you hardly notice it until you keep looking for it.

It is starting to look like the issue may be my new wick.  I really soaked it good now, and the harshness seems to be gone.  The vapor production is pretty darn good.  Maybe the highest for any of the tobacco flavors I have tried so far, and it is on the lowest power setting of my ego twist battery.

Now that the harshness is gone, and I got a drink to clear my throat of the burning…  The grassy flavor seems very mild, and I am starting to think this may be one of the best tobacco flavors from Flavor west.  I bought them all, and only have 3 more to test out after this one.  This may just be my new base flavor for things like bluebacco, and others.  At least until I find one better – perhaps a different brand will bring better vaping in the future, but only time will tell.

I am going to vape on this for a few hours and see if it looses it’s luster.  At only 2% flavor mix, I am surprised it isn’t all washed out, but it is actually nice.  I even had my wife take a few hits to get her opinion on it, and she said it was pretty darn good.  She liked it a lot.

Again, this is a 50/50 mix of PG and VG, and I did not put any nicotine in these test batches.   Now that the wicking issue seems to be fixed, the throat hit is very smooth and creamy.  Why did I say creamy?   Because it seems to have a very slight cream flavor going in.  The grassy flavor seems to be all but gone, and I am not noticing any bad after taste coming in to my mouth at all, after about 20 minutes of vaping this.

It does seem to have a mild tobacco flavor to it.  I kinda expected a bit more of that, but over all, this is pretty good tasting.  I will add one percent of flavor to see if it gets any better or if it takes it the other direction, but at 2%, it is pretty decent, and could be an all day vape as it is mild and not at all over powering, and is not leaving any kind of a lingering flavor in my mouth.  I do notice though, that with this flavor, if it even starts to run low on liquid, it produces that super harsh hit, quicker than any of the other flavors I have tried to date.

It is a definite one for you to try out if you are DIY vape juice mixing to find better and cheaper ways to vape.

Happy Vaping,

Tobacco Regular by Flavor West – review, DIY

Comments Off

I am testing out a 2% flavor batch of tobacco Regular, by flavor west today.  I sure hope it is better than the last batch I tried, as I am getting sick and tired of one perfume infested flavor after another.   I hope this review of the DIY flavors by flavor west will help people out, as I bought 27 flavors and there is not any mixing info on the net that I can find as far as how strong to make them.

Ok, here we go:

GROSS….   It is another damn perfume tasting batch of garbage.

I am really getting tired of tasting horrible tasting flavors from them.  Not one bit of tobacco flavor in it at all.  I can make out nothing but incense type flavors.  Pretty strong too.

After a few minutes the after taste is driving me nuts.  It is real nasty.  Yes, it put out great vapor clouds, but what is the point if the flavor sucks so bad.

This one goes right down the drain. and the bottle in the trash.

Not much more to be said about this terrible flavor: Tobacco Regular, by Flavor West, SUCKS!!!

DIY Fruit Punch, by flavor west Review

Hi all,  I am just writing another flavor review of a home made or DIY flavor I made up on Feb 9th.

The flavor is Fruit Punch by flavor west. Unless I state otherwise, in a review, I make my e-liquid as a 50/50 mix of PG and VG, but have been testing things out with more VG to see how it goes on some flavors.  This one is another 50/50 pg/vg blend.

When I first made this batch up, I made 10 milliliters, so I would have plenty if it turned out good.  However, I heat steeped it twice by putting it in a pan of just boiled water, until it cooled to room temp, then boiled the water and did it again, after shaking up the blend again.

Then, the next day – about 24 hours later, I gave it a try.  Oh man…  it about gagged me.  It could have gagged a maggot, as I say.

Well, I know that many flavors are no good right off the mixing table, so I put it aside, and had not touched it since.  I found it as I was making some other flavors today, and got brave enough to give it another go, after opening the bottle, and seeing that the smell was quite nice now.  Before it was so strong smelling, it would make your nose hairs burn.

So, I vaped the rest of my island flavor out of my dripping atty, so I could try it without having to wash out a clearomizer.  I didn’t have very high hopes for it.  I put in enough to check it out…  and oh my,, what a sweet surprise it was to vape this fruit punch mix I made up.

The first thing I noticed was a nice mild sweetness, then that tropical punch flavor kicked in the background.  Talk about a nice smooth vape that you could use in the morning, noon or night.  This turned out pretty darn good after waiting for about 4 weeks.  After the flavor was coming through good, I noticed a super soft throat hit.  The throat hit is very mild, but I only have it at 8% nicotine.  After several vapes, I can feel a slight tingle on my tongue, rather than in my throat.

Another huge plus for it, is the vapor production.  I have vaped a few that I thought were a 10 on a ten point scale, but this one knocked it out of the park with about a 14 on a 10 point scale.  I mean literally vapor so thick it blocks out what is in front of me.  I have never had vapor production this vivid before with any other flavor at all.   All I can say is WOW.  If you enjoy HUGE VAPOR, then you will absolutely love this if you like fruit punch to begin with.

One down side, which others may enjoy, is that I notice a creamy or waxy feeling in my mouth after vaping it for a while.  I think that is due to the vapor being so thick that it is allowing more of the flavor and nicotine to sit on my tongue.  That is just a guess though.

If I were to start selling flavors, this one would need to be made up a month before it was ready to sell, but oh is it so worth the wait.   I am now real glad I made a 10 mil test batch instead of just a 3 to 5 mil test.  Now I have plenty to vape over the next few days.

My electronic cigarette loves this stuff.  I am vaping this at 3.6 volts on my ego twist, in a 1.5 ohm atty.

If you are looking for a good DIY, then this is a great choice.

JC’s Summer Peach flavor.. nice e liquid

Wow, this is one that I just can’t wait to talk about.

As I opened the bottle of summer peach, from Johnson Creek, I was hit with a pleasing tobacco smell. I thought I would smell the peach, but instead, it just smells like a great tasting mild tobacco blend.  My nose did not pick up any smell of the peach flavor at all.  This lead me to think that it would be a disappointing flavor once I started vaping it.   Boy, was I wrong, and I am glad I was.

I put 4 drops into my atomizer to get it going, and took a few puffs. The peach flavor really stands out, with a bit of an apricot flavor coming through the back end.  That is a great combination.  I am not sure what happened to the tobacco flavor i can definitely smell when smelling the bottle, but this is one great tasting e-liquid for sure.   I don’t know about it making me feel like summer, since it is the end of February and about 32 degrees outside, but it sure lights up my taste buds.

One thing I noticed it is had a mild throat hit, and very little vapor production, but even with little vapor, it has great flavor.  That gives me mixed emotions on this one, because myself, and many others really enjoy a large vapor when we vape.  I think I will try putting a small amount into a vial and mixing with 20% VP and see if the vapor production comes out without watering down the flavor.  It is hard to say I am disappointing with this flavor due to the low amount of vapor, because the actual flavor is so delicious…  But it does leave me wanting for a nice thick vapor cloud.

I will add to this post once I try with 20% VG in just a bit.  Stick around and see how it goes.

Rainier… from Johnson Smoke Juice

Well, the name of this one gives you no clue as to what it will be.  Thankfully, they let you know on their site, that it is one of two  cherry flavors that they carry.  As I opened the bottle of e-liquid, I could smell the cherry flavor already.  Once opened, I took a light whiff…

Smells just like cherry cough drops. I thought, that it wouldn’t be very good at all.  So, I put a few drops into my corsair atty, and vaped it to give it a try.  I  could definitely taste the cherry right off the bat. Not smack you in the face strong, but it was there with a pretty bold cherry flavor.  One thing I noticed from the first puff, was how strong the vapor production is.  More so than with any other flavors I have tried yet.  This is a strong and mild flavor at once… kinda hard to explain.

I didn’t notice much throat hit right off the bat, so I turned up my ego twist a bit more, and there it was.  With more vapor too…  it made my electronic cigarette look like a smoke machine.

I am not sure why I read so many people talking about a tobacco flavor in this.  There is no tobacco…  they must have been putting it into a carto that they had not cleaned out that had a tobacco flavor in it before.  I personally think this would be a good flavor to add to some tobacco flavors that I don’t care for, so I will hold onto it for that, as they come up and see how it does.

It is not one of my favorites, and clearly not an all day vape for me, but it is OK.   It does have good flavor without being harsh, and a small but noticeable throat hit – more so, if you can dial up your voltage a bit.  But it has that cherry cough syrup flavor, that you either love or don’t.

I will try their black cherry and see if it is more to my liking.  But for vapor production alone… this has the most vapor I have seen on any flavor yet.

It is not going to be easy to flush this flavor out of my atty without putting in a new wick…  I have more flavors I want to get to, for you today.  I will probably have to flush my e-cig with some pure pg that I have to get it to be tasteless again, then try a new flavor.

Another good flavor of e-liquid from JC, Autumn Crisp

This morning I am trying out another flavor of Johnson Creeks smoke juice.  Autumn Crisp.

I am not sure if I will get to any other flavors today, like I planned.  I probably will…  This stuff is amazingly good and a deceptively addictive flavor.  I may vape this one all day.   To say it is good is a bit of an understatement.  It is very, very good.

This is a PG based e-liquid, or smoke juice as they call it.  I think that makes it a 50/5- blend of PG/VG, with them.  You can taste this one real well when you first fire up your atty, and it tastes just like a granny smith apple with caramel on it.  Or like one of those high flavored  caramel apple suckers you find every once in a while.    It is really good if you like caramel apples.

In fairness, I did this on my corsair atty on an ego twist battery.  I do notice that if you dial the voltage up too much, you will get a burnt taste.  And with as much caramel flavor as it hits you with, I wonder if vaping all day would start to caramelize on the atty. But it’s so tasty that it doesn’t matter.

This stuff even smells good when you open the bottle.  That is only the second one I have had that does that.

The vapor production is pretty good. About average I guess, and the throat hit is very mild.  This is more of a smooth tasty vape than something someone would look for if they like a lot of throat hit.  Even when dialing up the voltage on my twist, it heated the vapor more but didn’t increase the hit until I smoked it dry and got one of those NASTY DRY HITS !!!  Argh…  I hate it when I do that to myself.

Well, dry hits aside,,, this may not be an all day vape for me, but it sure makes a nice one to vape from time to time.  I bet it would be great for an after dinner vape.   After vaping this autumn crisp for an hour or so, I am ready to try some other flavors, so your in luck, and I will get up some other reviews today.  However, I may try this again after lunch or dinner and see how it is for an after meal flavor.

Johnson Creek Tennessee Cured 100% VG Smoke Juice

Wow, I am vaping a lot of these new flavors today, and can’t wait to put up my reviews.  I also tried the Tennessee Cured smoke juice from Johnson Creek in the VG only (Red Oak) line of flavors.

It is a lot like the 50/50 blend but has some noticeable differences.  It is only fair that I review them each separately because there is a difference in the two that is worthy of separating.

I am reviewing the Johnson Creek Red Oak 100% VG in this review.

Looking at their web page for this flavor, I see it has the following: “rich and smoky tobacco flavor”…”hints of burnt caramel and vanilla that combine with a smooth, mesquite vapor”.  It is a real nice combination of flavors, for sure.

Personally, I would say they hit this one out of the park!  It is quite a bit better than it’s pg/vg counterpart.   I can taste all the flavors they mentioned, and it is a bit sweeter.  It is a real nice, good strong tobacco flavor, with great undertones too.  I think I prefer this one over the pg/vg version because it is a little sweeter – not much, but just enough to smooth things out better.

Vaping this is like walking into a fine tobacco store and just inhaling the essence of the room, just like the PG/VG version, but a softer tone to it.  I could vape this all day, and love it – and I think I will vape it the rest of this evening, just to make sure I am correct on that.

One thing that I noticed was this does not have that medicine kinda flavor/smell, that the other version has at times.  This one is very consistent, and really  good tasting.

It has a good non harsh throat hit, and the tobacco flavor is solid.  It produces a good solid amount of vapor too. A bit more vapor I think, than the PG/VG version.

I am dripping into a MOV Corsair dripping atty at 4 volts.  I chose the corsair, because I like more air flow than any of the other tips seem to offer that I have found, and this one is adjustable to my liking.

This Johnson Creek Tennessee Cured all VG flavor is one you should ad to your list of flavors to sample. If your like me, you may find that you like it better than the 50/50 pg/vg blend.   I am really glad they made this both ways though, because I am sure there are plenty of people that do not want that slight added sweetness in it.  However, I think that makes this flavor even better than the original.

It just might become your daily vape, over the pg/vg version.

I think I like it more for sure, and most of what I vape is 50/50 blend.

After trying this one, I think I plan to sample more and more VG only flavors to see what else I may find that is good.

Vape on,

Tim L
